Sometimes, as a law student, I need to be inspired. This hasn’t changed since my first year, but the reason for it has changed. In my first year, I had to be reminded why I was putting myself through such a discombobulating experience. In my second year, I needed to be reminded of the possibilities when I finished. Now, in my third year, I am inspired for my papers and reminded that I only limit myself when I feel trapped in a thesis or idea.
I see first year students differently than I saw them last year, mostly because I see myself differently. I still know that any advice I give may be meaningless because people read, study, and learn differently. However, I also believe that students who are really driven to be here, but are struggling to figure things out can be inspired. My advice to them is to attend a speaker event on a topic of interest. It helps remind people why they’re in law school and what things are possible once they finish.
This semester, I have two paper classes. That means instead of exams (at which I am very, very bad), I will be writing two major papers. I am a better writer than I am exam taker, so for me this is a good thing. However, the papers are 20-30 pages and while I have written big papers, I haven’t written so many pages in one semester. Honestly, I’m a little worried and I me panic a little when I look at my outline. Panicking, as many of you probably know, often makes people’s brains shut down. I have been looking at my paper outline so often that I sometimes lose sight of how things fit together and often wonder what I was even thinking in choosing my topic.
